A handful of SEC players declared for the 2012 NFL Draft today, but it is one players decision to not go pro that is the most surprising of all. Former Florida Gators running back Jeff Demps has decided to not use his blazing speed on the NFL gridiron. Instead, Demps is focusing on running track and making the US Olympic team.
“Once I got done with the Gator Bowl, I kind of already had my mind made up, it was just when was I going to tell everyone,” Demps said. “I enjoy track and it’s something I love to do.
“When I’m out here, I’m enjoying myself and having fun with the guys. I wanted to come back and run. It’s somewhat of an individual sport, but it’s also a team sport. You win championships as a team.”
You have to commend Demps for following his true passion. While it may not be the most popular or the most common choice, Demps is passing up the top league in the country to try to be a worldwide sensation and play the sport he truly loves.
It would still be no surprise if a NFL team eventually goes after Demps. He has the kind of speed and explosiveness that could prove to be a game-changer. Throughout his career at Florida, Demps averaged 7.8 yards per rush, 9.4 yards per reception and 28.8 yards per kickoff return. The NFL talent is there, Demps will just have to first follow his dream and then the NFL could be his fall back plan.
