NFL Draft 2012: Minnesota Vikings Team Needs

facebooktwitterreddit

It seems like just yesterday the Minnesota Vikings were playing the Saints in the NFC Championship game that they went on to lose. The following year, Farve was terrible and the Vikings finished with a disappointing season. This season, they started off the year with quarterback Donovan McNabb, then put in rookie Christian Ponder to start the remainder of the season.  Unfortunately, Minnesota finished the season 3-13.

The Vikings’ biggest needs are: WR, LT, TE, CB, and MLB

The Vikings lost Sidney Rice in the offseason last year, so that really only left Ponder with Percy Harvin to throw to at wide receiver. Harvin is over worked, having to catch balls at WR and run the ball in the running back position. They need to draft another receiver in the second or third round.

Charlie Johnson is among the worst left tackles in the NFL. With the number two pick in the draft, I see them taking Matt Kalil. That is vital to give Ponder time and to help out Adrian Peterson.

The Vikings’ top two tight ends are free agents at the end of the season, but they still have their tight end from the 2011 draft, Kyle Rudolph. I see them taking another TE in the fourth round or later range.

Minnesota has major needs at corner. While playing in the NFC North, you compete against Rogers, Cutler, and Stafford six times a season. If you can’t stop their passing games, that will result in six loses for the Vikings.

With E.J. Henderson set to hit free agency, it’s possible the Vikings will be looking to draft a new middle linebacker. You need a strong guy to bust through the offensive line to rush the passer, while being a speedy man to chase down running backs and scrambling QBs. I could see the Vikings getting a MLB in the second to forth round.
