Tennessee Titans Team Needs
By Editorial Staff
Luckily for the Titans, they have a good core of returning players on both sides of the ball. On defense they have two good safties in Jordan Babineaux and Michael Griffin, and if they can retain Pro Bowl cornerback Cortland Finnegan they will have a top tier secondary returning next season.
Their two outstanding rookie linebackers Akeem Ayers and Colin McCarthy — who combined for 144 tackles — have many more productive years ahead of them. Will Witherspoon also still has a few good seasons left in him at weakside backer.
The biggest questionmark for this Titans defense is their defensive line. They have decent starting players, but lack the required depth to pressure opposing quarterbacks on every down. Former 1st round pick Derrick Morgan is beginning to seem like he will be a bust after missing his rookie season with a torn ACL. He was not able to live up to preseason expectations, with only 30 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Jurrel Casey had a good season with 52 tackles but lacked the pass rushing presence the Titans needed from him with only 2.5 sacks.
I expect them to address this problem in the draft and free agency.
The offensive side of the ball is also returning a bunch of good veterans and up and coming stars that should have Titan fans excited for this upcoming season. Chris Johnson had somewhat of a down year, but was still able to reach the 1,000 yard mark. I see no reason for the Titans to be worried about him heading into next season.
They are also returning some considerable talent at the wideout position too. If Kenny Britt can make it back for the beginning of next season after suffering a torn MCL and ACL, the wideout depth of the Titans will be very formidable. Damien Williams, Nate Washington, and Lavelle Hawkins all had good seasons this year fans should be looking forward to this side of the ball just as much next season as they should on defense.
The Titans also might have somewhat of a quarterback controversy this upcoming season. Although Matt Hasselbeck had a good resurgence this season, many fans were clamoring for the front office to bring in rookie Jake Locker. Fortunately for the Titans, having two talented quarterbacks on one roster is never a bad thing.
Similarly to the defensive side of the ball the big question mark for Tennessee is on the line. After being publicly criticized by head Coach Mike Munchak for not being able to open up running lanes for Chris Johnson. After starting the season ranked the 13th best o-line in football they left much to be desired. The Titans will need to make some off season acquisitions and player evaluations if they want to return to offensive line prominence.
