NFL Free Agency 2012: Chicago Bears Plan To Keep Matt Forte Off Market

Following an interview with Chicago Bears President and CEO Todd Phillips on ESPN 1000 in Chicago, it is safe to say that Matt Forte will remain with the Chicago Bears for at least 2012. During the interview, Phillips said the following:

"“We’d like to (work out a long-term deal) but as (Bears General Manager Phil Emery) pointed out we obviously will at least consider placing the franchise tag on him. We don’t have any intention of letting Matt hit the open market. We’ll sit down with him privately, Phil will, and discuss what the plans are prior to the Feb. 20 franchise tag date.”"

This is an aggressive but dangerous move by the Bears as Forte has hinted previously that should a franchise tag be placed on hi,m he might holdout in 2012. Despite missing the final four games on the 2011 season with a sprained right knee, Forte was expected to be the most coveted running back on the free agent market given that Ray Rice is almost certain to re-sign with the Baltimore Ravens.

New Bears general manager Phil Emery hasn’t commented on the Forte situation at this time, but you can expect some word from him in the coming days. Much like Jerry Angelo, he is the man who makes decisions on player and coaching personnel.
