So onto the position I would have played had I been a footballer – the offensive line. Now I have split this section up into two parts and today I’ll be addressing the offensive tackles and follow that up with the Guards and Centers tomorrow. So let’s get going shall we?
1. Demetrius Bell – Bills
The clear top offensive tackle in the 2012 free agent class, Bell is the best offensive lineman the Bills have with above average pass protection and excellent run blocking. However, he’s had some considerable injury issues, so despite telling Bills GM Buddy Nix that he really wants to stay in Buffalo, the Bills may decide to move on. Should Bell hit the market, expect teams to be cautious. Bell won’t get the top contract that his talent deserves but he may at least get a three or four year deal if money isn’t too big an issue for him.
Possible landing spots – BUF, STL, MIN, WAS, CAR, MIA, KC, ARI, SD, PIT, BAL
2. Jared Gaither – Chargers
It wasn’t so long ago that Gaither was one of the top offensive tackles in the league on the Baltimore Ravens. In recent years, Gaither has had some injury issues and has found himself moving teams a bit — first the Kansas City Chiefs, then the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers were grateful to get him and since arriving inSan Diego he has begun to look more like his former self. He’s worth taking a chance on with a one or two year contract for teams that need a cheap, but talented right tackle.
Possible landing spots – BUF, STL, MIN, WAS, CAR, MIA, KC, ARI, SD, PIT
3. Kareem McKenzie – Giants
There are whispers that should the Giants win the Super Bowl that McKenzie may retire. If he doesn’t and the Giants decide not to re-sign their veteran right tackle, McKenzie should easily find a new home for a year or two. This is one of those unassuming offensive linemen who just likes to get stuck in and enjoys his work. In his career he’s only ever missed half a dozen or so games due to injury, so he’s durable — always important in today’s NFL. While not spectacular, McKenzie is a hard worker who will always give everything he’s got with the learned technique of a veteran.
Possible landing spots – NYG, BUF, STL, MIN, WAS, CAR, MIA, KC, ARI, SD, PIT, BAL
Players to watch out for – Max Starks, King Dunlap, Levi Brown, Artis Hicks
