The biggest injury news surrounding Super Bowl XLVI is the status of New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. It almost a certainty that Gronkowski will be playing in the big game, but what role will he play and how effective will he really be?
Gronkowski’s ankle is in bad shape. There are reports that he has a high-ankle sprain and that the injury could require surgery following the Super Bowl, so could Gronkowski really be that big of a key for New England? It is unlikely.
I expect Gronkowski to be a decoy in this game. He will still be able to help in blocking, during two tight end sets, but expect Aaron Hernandez to be the tight end who comes up with the big plays. Receiver Chad Ochocinco could also be active and would add another down-field weapon for New England.
While Gronkowski may not be able to contribute in the role that we are used to seeing him in, he will still make a big impact on the Patriots chances. His blocking and ability to draw defenders away from the true targets could open up the New England passing attack. Will that be enough to earn the Patriots the win and add another Lombardi Trophy to their showcase?
