New England Patriots To Use Franchise Tag On Wes Welker

Despite a dropping a crucial pass that would have sealed the fate of the New York Giants and given the New England Patriots the win, wide receiver Wes Welker is expected to return to town and get his money.

While speaking on a South Florida radio show — Armando and Perkins — Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe claimed to know the Patriots plans for Welker. What do those plans include? Well, it looks like the plans involve the thing many players dread the most — the franchise tag.

“He’s going to be tagged, that I know for pretty much certain,” Bedard said. “If they don’t, he’s going to sign with the Jets and they’re going to have to try and cover him twice a year, or the Dolphins.

“They want him back. I don’t see why things would change now, but the way it stood before the Super Bowl, they’re going to tag him.”

Could the franchise tag change how Welker views the Patriots front office? Bedard went on to speculate that Welker could sit out the first half of the season if he was tagged. This could turn into a very ugly situation for the Patriots. One thing is for certain. New England needs to talk with Welker immediately and get a new contract signed.
