Randy Moss is one of the best receivers in NFL history. After a tumultuous season in his storied career, he did something that no one expected and retired before the 2011 season — and he didn’t make a huge deal about it to the media. After a year in retirement,Moss made the announcement that he will make a come back in 2012 — the announcement came on his 35th birthday.
Moss is one of the most decorated receivers in NFL history. After being selected with the 21st pick in 1999, Moss had an amazing rookie season — capping it off with 17 touchdown receptions and the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Moss continued to put up good numbers year after year culminating in 2007 with his record setting 23 touchdowns.
But at 35 how effective can Randy Moss be in the NFL? Jerry Rice was able to be effective until he was 42, and Terrell Owens at 38 thinks he can still make an impact in the league after coming a knee surgery. Moss was able to stay healthy for the majority of his career and avoid major injury. He has also had a year to let his body rest, so he will be coming in on very fresh legs and he will still have his intimidating size and speed.
There are teams in the league who could use the help at a deep threat receiver. The Rams absolutely NEED a deep threat that can help open up running lanes for Steven Jackson and add a legitimate target for Sam Bradford. The Jaguars are another team that need a number one receiver to help the young Blaine Gabbert. The Bears could also use a legitimate proven deep threat to allow the speedy Devin Hester to get in space in underneath routes. There are many other teams who could make a run at Randy Moss, but these two teams have the greatest need, and make the most sense.
Depending on what the Chargers decide to do with Vincent Jackson they can consider bringing Moss in, but I don’t see that happening because of Moss’ and Norv Turners relationship when they were both in Oakland. I don’t see him going back to the Patriots either, their style of offense has changed from the deep ball, to short quick underneath routes to Wes Welker and their very talented tight ends.
Where could Moss end up this season and what kind of impact can we expect to see from him on the field?
