Washington Redskins Plan To Sign TE Fred Davis To Long-Term Deal

The Washington Redskins — yes, the Washington Redskins who traded the farm for Robert Griffin III — placed the franchise tag on tight end Fred Davis, before the NFL deadline. Davis was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent and the Redskins wanted to sign him to a long-term deal. Unfortunately, they were up against the clock and simply ran out of time.

Now, general manager Bruce Allen has come out to the public and stated that the team hopes to lock up Davis for the future. He said:

"“We franchised Fred because he was our most valuable free agent and we couldn’t get a deal done. But we’re hoping to get a deal done that is a longer-term deal and we’ll see what happens in the future.”"

The move makes sense. Not only is Davis a very solid tight end, but he will give RG3 a security blanket underneath as he grows and begins to understand the intricacies of a NFL defense. Whether or not Griffin struggles in the early part of his career is yet to be seen, but the Redskins plan to bring in Davis for the long-term to help RG’s development.
