Bill Parcells Will Not Become Saints Interim Coach; Replacement Will Likely Come From Internal Search

The talk that Bill Parcells could come out of retirement as a favor for longtime friend Sean Payton to take over as the New Orleans Saints interim head coach can now be squashed. Per ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Parcells has decided to remain retired.

With Parcells remaining retired, the Saints will now likely stay within the organization to name their interim coach.

The favorite to land the interim coaching job is assistant head coach Joe Vitt. Vitt is suspended for six games, but the league’s punishment does not begin until after the conclusion of the preaseason. Vitt could have the reigns of the team until the start of week one, where he could hand over the show to someone else until he returns in week six.

In that instance, offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael could take over weeks one through six. That would allow the Saints to keep their team unity, all while sticking to their chain of command within the organization.

The Saints will likely take a little time to make their decision official, but look for a combination of Vitt and Carmichael to lead the Saints in 2012.
