Justin Blackmon Could Start NFL Career Suspended… And He Should
By Josh Sanchez
It’s no secret by now that Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon was arrested for aggravated DUI over the weekend and blew a .24 on the breathalyzer. Just for some perspective, around .27 is where death becomes possible… and Blackmon was operating a vehicle. That’s about as irresponsible as you can get. It was Blackmon’s second DUI arrest.
Blackmon had a chance to own up to his actions, but instead plead “not guilty” to the charges. That move along should worry the Jaguars and highlights Blackmon’s immaturity.
While speaking on ESPN’s NFL Live Monday afternoon, insider Adam Schefter shed some light on some possible penalties that Blackmon could face from the league.
“A suspension certainly is within reach here. It’s possible [Blackmon] will start out his career suspended,” Schefter said.
That’s not exactly the way that the Jaguars wanted a guy that they traded up for to start his professional career, but it’s something that needs to be done. Roger Goodell needs to stand up and finally do what is right by suspending Blackmon at least four games for his dangerous and patterned behavior.
If Blackmon gets away with a slap on the wrist, it sets a bad example and will become an issue further down the road when players find themselves in the same situation.
Someone needs to teach Blackmon a lesson and that should be Commissioner Goodell. It’s unfortunate to see him start his career suspended, but anything less than a four game suspension will be an embarrassment.
