Jaguars GM Gene Smith Has No Plans To Renegotiate Maurice Jones-Drew’s Contract
By Josh Sanchez
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew could be in for a lengthy holdout and today’s comments by general manager Gene Smith could strengthen Jones-Drew’s stance.
The Jaguars open up mandatory minicamp on Tuesday and Smith expects every player under contract to be there.
“He has expressed that he would like to renegotiate and we have expressed, again, that we feel he has a contract with two years left and we expect him to fulfill those obligations,” Smith said.
Smith goes on to say that the team has had no contract talks with Jones-Drew’s agent.
Jones-Drew has skipped all of the Jaguars offseason workouts to this point, but if he is serious about a holdout, we will find out on Tuesday when mandatory workouts begin. At that point, it will be up to the head coach to decide whether or not to fine MJD if he does not show.
Jones-Drew has two-years left on his five-year deal. The Jaguars star running back is scheduled to make $4.45 million in 2012 and $4.95 million next season.
