Mike Jenkins Will Attend Cowboy’s Minicamp

ESPN sources say that disgruntled Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins will report to the team’s mandatory minicamp that begins Tuesday. Jenkins has been skipping OTAs and other voluntary workouts for various reasons. In the final year of his contract Jenkins had been looking to sign an extension with the Cowboys, but the offseason acquisitions of free agent corner Brandon Carr and drafting corner Morris Claiborne with the 6th overall pick in the NFL draft have left Jenkins confused about his future with the team. There were reports that Mike Jenkins was demanding a trade, but Jerry Jones wasn’t budging, enticed by the possibility of having one of his teams’ weaknesses become it’s strength with so much depth at the position.

The Cowboys reportedly shopped Jenkins around during the draft but we’re asking for too much in return. The Cowboys instead turned their focus into keeping him and integrating him into the defensive plan this year. Chances are Jenkins will move to the slot with Claiborne and Carr most likely the starters this upcoming season. Jenkins who is primarily accustomed to working on the sidelines will have to adjust to working between the hash marks.

“He’s got a whole new world to learn there,” defensive coordinator Rob Ryan said. “We’re going to move him in there to compete.”

While Jenkins will be in Valley Ranch he won’t immediately be working out, he is still recovering from offseason shoulder injuries. Instead he’ll use this time to relearn Ryan’s defensive scheme who is re-teaching the team. Had Jenkins not reported to the mandatory minicamp he would be fined $10,000 for the first day, $20,000 for the second, and $30,000 for the third.

And Cowboys fans everywhere just got more excited about this upcoming season and the championship potential. ESPN’s Adam Schefter answered a fans inquiry about by saying the Cowboys chances are “high, very high.”
