It is no secret that the Cleveland Browns are offering up quarterback Colt McCoy to any team that would give minimal compensation for the former Texas Longhorns star. One team that should strongly consider the option got a good look at McCoy in college, the Dallas Cowboys.
Yes, Dallas signed Kyle Orton to a three-year, $10.5 million contract to be the team’s backup quarterback this season, but you can always use depth — especially when that depth could come from a signal-caller that played high school and college football in the state of Texas and has a lot of untapped potential.
McCoy wouldn’t offer any competition to Romo or Orton this season, but he should be considered as a future investment. When you look at the team’s other project quarterback — Stephen McGee from Texas A&M — it is clear that the team needs another option.
McGee and McCoy could battle for the number three quarterback spot in camp and during the preseason. The team would then be able to groom McCoy and perhaps pull a Kevin Kolb-like move and trade him down the road for a higher draft pick. It is an option that makes a lot of sense and needs to be considered.
McGee hasn’t impressed anyone during his time with the Cowboys, so it’s time for the team to start looking at other options. They can start by giving the former Longhorns star an honest look.
