On the heels of Robert Griffin III’s rookie deal with the Washington Redskins being completed, it is being reported that the Indianapolis Colts and first-overall pick Andrew Luck are “close” to a deal and that it could happen any day now. Griffin signed a guaranteed four-year, $21.1 million deal, so that is a reference point for Luck’s upcoming contract.

Colts owner Jim Irsay spoke on the issue during a news conference for the city’s bid to host the 2018 Super Bowl. Irsay didn’t display any doubt that his franchise signal-caller would be under contract in time for training camp.

“Anybody who’s done negotiations knows that you can get close and then remain close for a long period of time,” Irsay said. “You know, close doesn’t always mean that it’s going to get done the next day.

“But … he’ll be in camp, there is no question that he’ll be signed in time. We’ll be talking this week, and we are talking, and there’s no question that he’ll be signed for the beginning of training camp and ready to go. No doubt about it. We’ve been close, and I think we’ll be able to accomplish the final couple details, and it’s going to get done. No doubt about it.”

It is crucial that the Colts get Luck under contract and have him ready for camp. Even though he is the most NFL ready quarterback to come out of college since Peyton Manning or John Elway, you cannot fake reps.

Getting Luck those crucial reps early in his career could be the think that takes him from being very good to being great.
