Curtis Martin Likens Rex Ryan to Bill Parcells
By Mike Dyce
Rex Ryan is an outspoken and brazen head coach of a storied NFL franchise, and it hasn’t prevented him from leading the team to success. In 2 of his seasons at the helm of the New York Jets he led them to 2 AFC Championship appearances, falling short of the Superbowl both times. Curtis Martin was with the New York Jets in the late 90s when this resurgence began.
Before Bill Parcells arrived in New York the Jets had been to only the playoffs seven times. Since Parcells touched down in 1997? The Jets have been to the play offs seven of those 15 seasons. And Rex Ryan is resposinsble for two of those appearances.
In a conference call, Curtis Martin was asked about comparing Rex Ryan to Bill Parcells.
“I think that Parcells and Rex are two guys who are the same with different personalities. Their demand and their respect, I believe, is very similar amongst the team. But I just think that they have a different way of expressing them selves. Parcells is more a guy thats going to keep everything close to the vest and Rex Ryan is very outspoken. I think that both of their styles are very effective.”
High praise from a Hall of Fame running back who led the team through one of it’s most successful periods. And Curtis didn’t just leave it at that he went on to say that he felt Rex Ryan was a good fit for New York and the Jets.
“I really like also the way Rex Ryan is… I mean he is in New York, if he was in Denver or in Green Bay, I don’t that his style would fit the team or fit the city,” Martin said. “But I think when you’re in New York and when you have a guy like Rex, I think it’s great for the fans and I think it’s really good for the team.”
Rex Ryan is looking to continue that success in the future.
