Russell Wilson Takes Huge Step Towards Becoming Seahawks Starter

When the Seattle Seahawks signed Matt Flynn to a three-year contract, it was expected that he was going to be the team’s starting quarterback in 2012 and beyond.

What the team didn’t expect was that their third round draft pick would out perform Flynn.

Russell Wilson turned some heads with his first two performances during the preseason, but there were still plenty of skeptics due to him getting just second half playing time.  On Friday, a lot of that skepticism stopped.

Wilson was given the start by head coach Pete Carroll, and didn’t disappoint.

The former Wisconsin Badger lead the Seahawks to 30 points on the Kansas City Chiefs first team defense in the team’s regular season dress rehearsal. Then, against the Chiefs second team defense, he marched Seattle down for yet another touchdown.

Wilson went 13-of-19 for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He even ran the ball twice for 58 yards to carry the Seahawks to what has become a shellacking of the Chiefs.

If the battle for the starting quarterback job was an open competition in Seattle, Wilson sure did his best to close the door on any chance of Flynn starting in week one. Flynn didn’t play in tonight’s game due to a sore elbow.

While Wilson’s overall game was near perfect, there were two plays that stood out. The first, a beautiful pass to Braylon Edwards for a 31-yard gain. The second was a 40-yard pass to Terrell Owens who made the catch while falling on his back.

In NFL SpinZone’s upcoming preview of the Seahawks, they were picked as a sleeper team in the NFC for a playoff position. If Wilson brings this style of play into the regular season, then that pick may turn out to be one of the smarter picks of the season.
