There are reports coming out of New York that the Jets’s stud cornerback Darrelle Revis is on the market. The Jets are dealing with cap issues and have been rumored to be shopping several players in order to dump salaries in an attempt to get under the salary cap next season.
Darrelle Revis is arguably the most desirable player on the New York Jets roster, and their certainly would be interest in him from teams around the league. The Jets though are maintaining that they are simply exploring options and haven’t committed to trade the star, a simple way of gauging interest.
But as desirable as a player of Revis’s caliber is there are always risks involved.
First, he is a free agent after this season. We’ve seen this trend in the NBA where teams trade players who are presumably leaving via free agency in the off season in an attempt to get something in return for a star, as opposed to nothing if he left via free agency. This all started after LeBron James left Cleveland to go to Miami, and Cleveland was left empty handed. We don’t know if this mindset translates to the NFL yet.
Second, he is coming off an ACL injury, and he might not get in return what he could’ve gotten the Jets before this injury. However with the success of Adrian Peterson this season, those fears might subside.
Needless to say, with no guarantee that he’ll be around after 2013 doesn’t provide much incentive. This would simply be a salary cap move.
Rex Ryan, per reports, has supposedly voiced his desire to keep Revis. This certainly comes as no surprise from the defensive oriented head coach, why get rid of his best defensive player, arguably the best in the NFL.
But owner Woody Johnson has already confirmed their NBA like thinking here saying he is “pessimistic” about their ability to sign Revis and keep him in New York beyond next season.
Do you want your team to land Revis? Or where do you think he’ll land?
