The Chicago Bears have made quarterback Jay Cutler very happy. They signed former New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod.
“Source: #Bears and reps for #Saints LT Jermon Bushrod are finishing up a long-term deal. #JayCutlersmiles,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network tweeted.
“Bears give former Saints OT Jermon Bushrod a five-year deal, as well,” Adam Schefter tweeted.
Apparently Bushrod didn’t see the video of Cutler getting in his offensive lines face so it might not seem as glamorous as he thinks. But Jay Cutler surely will be excited to have him.
Bushrod is widely considered one of the best left tackles in the league, however Drew Brees gets the ball out faster than Jay Cutler does, and that could set him up for failure in his tenure with the Bears. But the Bears offensive line coach, Aaron Komer, was with the Saints and Bushrod and knows him well. Certainly he thinks he is an upgrade over J’Marcus Webb if this move is being made.
Bushrod is a two time Pro Bowler who took advantage of the injury to Jammal Brown to lock down that job on the 2009 Super Bowl run. The Chicago Bears have also made progress on the defensive side of the ball signing franchise player defensive tackle Henry Melton to a one year $8.5 million deal. That is a fully guaranteed 5 years for Henry Melton.
UPDATE: Deal is worth $36 million according to NFL Network.
