Former first overall draft pick QB Jamarcus Russell is working out with the Chicago Bears today. Ian Rapoport is reporting that it “information gathering in case. It’s unlikely anything is imminent.”
Just in case Jay Cutler goes down with an injury, Mark Trestman and the Bears would have options. The Bears only have Josh McCown and Matt Blanchard on there roster as the available backups for Cutler. If Russell can get a contract, it would be a good opportunity for the kid to win an NFL job.
There were reports that Russell was down to 265 pounds in late May. He has been working his butt off to get down to that size. He ballooned to over 300 pounds at one point.
I wish nothing but the best for him. He has worked his tail off and deserves an opportunity. He was drafted with the first overall pick by the Raiders and is widely regarded as one of the worst draft selections EVER.
Maybe he can change that image a little and become a decent backup on someone’s roster. Maybe that roster is with Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears.
