The New York Jets, always having to be in the spotlight of the media, now have a quarterback competition we are all supposed to be interested in between the butt-fumbling Mark Sanchez and the rookie with a chip on his shoulder in Geno Smith.

Sanchez has been putrid and more than proven he does not have what it takes to be an NFL starter, but he’s confident enough to tell the media he’ll beat Smith for the starting gig according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News:

"“When it comes down to a competition, I just put my money on myself,” Sanchez said. “And bet on myself and go play and go win the job. So if that’s what it’s going to be like it’s been clear that’s what it is, alright let’s go.”"

The Spin: Sanchez better keep a lid on it this preseason. He’s going to be garnering all kinds of wrong attention by saying stuff like this. Confidence is great, but the media loves to pick on him and he’s shown in the past an ability to be impacted by the media.

The quarterback competition is nothing special in New York. Sanchez may win the battle at the get-go on the merit of experience, but it takes one bad game for the the New York fans and media to make it all come crashing down in exchange for an exciting, high-profile rookie.
