New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is currently stuck in a battle for his job with rookie quarterback Geno Smith. While Smith has a long way to go before earning the right to start, it’s not a certainty that the veteran Sanchez will be able to fend him off.

Yet here we are early in the preseason and Sanchez is already talking about playoffs. Not only that, he doesn’t seem to be suggesting playoffs—he seems to be guaranteeing an appearance this year. Quote from the Los Angeles Times:

"“But it will turn around,” said Sanchez, 26. We’ll get back on track, get a couple wins, and once we get in the playoffs this year we’ll make a little run. That’s all you need to do is make your run, get hot at the right time, stay healthy.”"

Unbelievable. For a man who has done nothing of merit for the duration of his time in the league and has a rookie breathing down his neck, Sanchez sure has loads of confidence about next season.

Maybe that’s a good thing. Sanchez is going to need to remain positive with a top rookie gunning for his job and the majority of the fans and media in a brutal city all but hoping for his downfall. The playoffs are a long way off for Sanchez, a man who has not even won the job yet.

One step at a time, Mark.
