The battle for Florida is set to take place—OK, we’ll stop. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins are set to square off in Week 1 of the preseason on Friday in a matchup that featured two teams attempting to build for the future.
The future may be now for one of these teams, but you are not going to find that out by simply watching this matchup. Still, there are plenty of interesting things to take away from the game, so let’s get right to it.

Dolphins Player to Watch: Lamar Miller

Lamar Miller is the hot pick by many to be the breakout player of the year in 2013. He started things off horribly against the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame game by fumbling the very first handoff he saw.
Miller looked good after the early mistake, but now he has a target on his back. If Miller falters there are a few backs on the roster looking to steal his spot. Watch for any mistakes from Miller. Also keep an eye out for his burst and vision as he continues to develop.
Jaguars Player to Watch: Luke Joeckel

Many thought Joeckel would be playing left tackle by now, but that’s hard for him to do with the stellar Eugene Monroe manning the spot for at least one more year.
Joeckel instead will hold down the right tackle spot and attempt to effectively pave the way for running back Maurice Jones-Drew. This being his first taste of NFL game action, keep a close eye on how Joeckel handles the pressure from Cameron Wake and Co.
Matchup to Watch: Jaguars Quarterbacks vs. Dolphins Defense
Jul 31, 2013; Jacksonville, FL, USA;Jacksonville Jaguars quarterbacks Chad Henne (7) and Blaine Gabbert (11) walk out to practice before the first day of training camp in pads at EverBank Field. Mandatory Credit: Phil Sears-USA TODAY Sports
Believe it or not, Jacksonville has a quarterback competition brewing whether they admit it or not. Blaine Gabbert has failed dramatically in recent years, but Chad Henne was not much better in spot duty last season.
Should either of the two put up a horrible performance here it’s going to leave a lasting impression in the minds of the coaching staff. Gabbert is by no means promised the starting job, but Henne has to step up and steal it.
Prediction

This is going to be a sloppy game between two teams with plenty of question to answer. Jacksonville is beginning to build a franchise the smart way (hence taking a left tackle despite already having an elite one on the roster), but the Dolphins appear to be a bit ahead in the quality of talent department.
Dolphins 17, Jaguars, 14
