Calvin Johnson is the best Detroit Lions player who is not at practice today, but the most important absence during today’s practice session for the Lions is Chris Houston. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Houston did not participate in today’s practice session due to a foot injury, and there should be serious concerns regarding his chances of playing in the big Thanksgiving game against the rival Green Bay Packers. While the Lions are the favorites against the Packers and also the favorites to win the division, they are by no means a lock in either scenario. I mean, this is a team that lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, and the Lions can only hope that it was indeed an anomaly. Still, that loss underscores the fact that it truly is “Any Given Sunday”. The Lions are hoping that it doesn’t become “Any Given Thanksgiving” this week, especially since the Packers aren’t to be taken lightly even with Matt Flynn set to start.
Houston injured his foot during the loss to the Buccaneers in the third quarter, and it reportedly came on the play in which he was burned by Tiquan Underwood for a very long touchdown reception. It has been a very disappointing season overall for Houston, who is the Lions top corner. The Lions pass defense as a whole has issues, but they could be in a really bad position on Thanksgiving if Houston is unable to play.
Keep a close eye on all injury reports related to Houston’s status, because this is definitely a key situation heading into this week’s game. Houston is still a talented and important player to the Lions defense despite his inconsistent play this season, and he was a crucial re-signing made by the Lions this pass offseason, all told.
