Carolina Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn is one of the team’s biggest priorities to re-sign this offseason, because losing him would create a huge hole at the cornerback position. While the Panthers could use another CB if they do keep Munnerlyn, it would become their biggest need if their top CB were to leave in free agency. Most people expect him to remain in Charlotte, and both sides will begin talks soon.
The Charlotte Observer’s Joe Person reports that Munnerlyn stated his agent will meet with team officials at the Combine next week, and it will be interesting to see how quickly both sides get some momentum. The Panthers have until the 11th of March to re-sign Munnerlyn, who is definitely somebody they would love to lock up to a multi-year deal. Re-signing breakout safety and leader Mike Mitchell is near the top of their list, but keeping Munnerlyn around is at least as important.
Last season, the 25-year-old South Carolina product recorded 73 tackles, three sacks, and 12 passes defended in the best season of his career, and he’s always been a solid player. The speedy CB has the ability to play in the slot and on the outside, and he is an excellent run defender who can be physical with receivers. He also possesses above-average ball skills and is a nifty blitzer in nickel packages. While Mitchell is solid, Munnerlyn is the best DB on the Panthers.
