Brent Grimes, Vontae Davis, Alterraun Verner, and Aqib Talib headline yet another talented group of impending free agent corners this offseason, and it will be interesting to see how many of those four talented, legitimate No. 1 CBs hits the open market. I would expect the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and Indianapolis Colts to keep their star cover men around long-term, but a deal- or even a tag- is not a certainty at this point.
That said, at least one of those corners seems to expect a long-term deal to be worked out, as the South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s Chris Perkins reports that Brent Grimes is “cautiously optimistic” that he will receive a multi-year deal from the Dolphins this offseason, as opposed to a franchise tag. At this point, it is impossible to envision the Dolphins letting Grimes go, because he is so crucial to their success. Easily their best CB, losing him would create a massive hole in the secondary and cause the team to lose one of its most reliable and talented players.
Grimes is a fringe-elite CB who has good ball skills, run defense, and excellent coverage skills, rarely allowing much to opposition receivers and more than making up for his height. After playing on a one-year, prove-it deal in 2013, the previously undervalued corner fully proved his health and deserves a hefty pay day.
