The safety position in the 2014 NFL Draft is pretty much a grab bag beyond the very talented top trio of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Jimmie Ward, and Calvin Pryor, Those three safety prospects are ranking in varying order depending on the draft analyst in question, because while Clinton-Dix is still generally regarded as the top safety in the class, some have Pryor or Ward on top. Beyond those three, there are a few other solid prospects worth keeping an eye on, but probably the hottest prospect at the position right now as far as pre-draft visits go is Minnesota Golden Gophers defensive back Brock Vereen.
According to a league source close to the National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson, Vereen has met with the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, and Cincinnati Bengals. He obviously has a great football pedigree with New England Patriots excellent all-purpose RB Shane Vereen being his older brother, and, as Wilson notes, his father also played in the NFL.
It will be interesting to see where Vereen gets picked as a result of this buzz, but I’m sure teams love his intelligence, experience, versatility (he can play CB or S), production in college, and his incredible workout numbers. Vereen is fast (sub-4.5 forty), strong (25 bench reps and plenty of big hits in his highlight reel), and athletic.
