New Pick: Vince Wilfork
2004 Pick: Kellen Winslow
With no good QBs left, the Browns do the next best thing when re-building a team—build from the lines out. Wilfork has been the Patriot’s best defensive player since being drafted, his massive frame clogs the middle so much that it’s given the Pats a good run defense every year.
Picking in the top ten is something the Browns have had a lot of practice at since coming back into the NFL, but also something they have not mastered. When I have the Browns picking Wilfork here, I see this pick as their defensive version of Joe Thomas. A great player, who’s incredibly solid and reliable.
Instead with their actual sixth pick, the only thing the Browns got correct was the University of Miami. Winslow had one good year for Cleveland, but overall, his stint was marred by a bad attitude, a broken leg and off-the field incidents. Wilfork in his career has embodies the Patriot way, and in Cleveland, he’d be the kind of great, high character player that would help lead them out of the NFL’s cellar.
