2014 NFL Mock Draft: Long Final
By Andrew Long
25. San Diego Chargers
Jason Verrett
CB, TCU
I’m sure that San Diego would like to have Kyle Fuller slide to this pick; however, that’s simply not the case. After just barely missing out on Fuller, I have the Chargers taking fellow cornerback, Jason Verrett.
Having a talent like Verrett is essential for a team that is guaranteed to play the Denver Broncos & Peyton Manning twice a year.
26. Cleveland Browns (from Indianapolis)
Kelvin Benjamin
WR, FSU
The Browns got their quarterback at number 4 and should look to round out their offense with this pick. I’m a big Kelvin Benjamin fan and I think that he would be a great addition to the Cleveland offense.
Benjamin (6’5”- 240 lbs.) would supply Johnny Manziel with another big, strong playmaker on the perimeter. In Cleveland, a lack of weapons wouldn’t be an excuse for failure, as their offense would possess Ben Tate, Jordan Cameron, Josh Gordon, and Kelvin Benjamin.
27. New Orleans Saints
Marqise Lee
WR, USC
Marqise Lee tumbling down to number 27 is an absolute godsend for the Saints. Lee has the ability to be taken in the top 20 (used to have him as my #4 receiver. #6 now).
If I’m Marqise Lee, I’m very pleased with the fall. Not everyone gets the opportunity to catch passes from Drew Brees.
28. Carolina Panthers
Morgan Moses
OT, Virgina
The Panthers could easily go wide receiver with this pick, but with the top pass-catchers gone, I foresee Carolina adding to their offensive line. The number one priority in Carolina has to be to protect Cam Newton. Adding Morgan Moses would be a good start.
Moses is massive (6-6, 314 lbs.) and would be a great value pick at this point in the draft.
As I mentioned earlier, this draft class is stacked with talent at the wide receiver position. Jarvis Landry, Davante Adams, Jordan Matthews, and Allen Robinson could all be in play when the Panthers pick again in the second round.
29. New England Patriots
Stephon Tuitt
DE, Notre Dame
The Patriots have placed a lot of emphasis on their defense this offseason. I’d look for them to continue with that trend early on in the NFL draft. That’s why I have them selecting defensive end, Stephon Tuitt.
Tuitt is a big-bodied defensive end that would fit very well in the New England defensive scheme. He’s a good tackler and can hold his own in the trenches.
The Patriots will be getting a good player if they draft Stephon Tuitt at 29.
30. San Francisco 49ers
Dee Ford
DE, Auburn
Dee Ford played as a defensive end in college, but has the skills and size to play the position of rush linebacker in the NFL. He’s a player that plays hard and would seemingly benefit from good coaching and the company of skilled linebackers like Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis, and NaVorro Bowman.
31. Denver Broncos
Xavier Su’a-Filo
OG, UCLA
The clock is ticking on Peyton Manning’s career and the Denver Broncos are all in on another Super Bowl run. Drafting Su’a-Filo fills a need for Denver and also provides Peyton with better pass-protection.
Joel Bitonio is a possibility here, too.
32. Seattle Seahawks
Cody Latimer
WR, Indiana
Golden Tate departed in free agency and the Seattle Seahawks could use another weapon for Russell Wilson. I debated between Cody Latimer & Davante Adams with this pick; Latimer won out.
I could also see Seattle going with Kony Ealy here.
Well, there it is. My final mock draft of the year is complete. Obviously not everybody is going to agree with my picks, but I would love to hear some input! Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
