Here is the analysis on the selection:

The Bears were historically bad on defense in 2013, so there is a big need to bolster that side of the ball. Phil Emery invested a lot of free agent resources to rebuild the defensive line. A lot of people hoped defensive tackle Aaron Donald will slip to #14, but with him off the board, the Bears focus on their next biggest need, safety. Calvin Pryor is known as a bit of a thumper in the defensive backfield, so he’ll add an intimidation factor that the Bears have lacked in the safety position since Gary Fencik.
