San Francisco 49ers star tight end Vernon Davis decided to leverage himself against the team by skipping offseason workouts to make his displeasure with his current contract known, but he’s already compensated too much and is too old to successfully hold out as a TE. Combine that with the fact that the 49ers had to extend Colin Kaepernick, added more pass-catching talent at WR, and have other contract squabbles to deal with, and it’s easy to see why Davis gave up chase and reported to camp today.

I wouldn’t say Alex Boone is in the best chance to leverage himself against the team, but he’s in a better chance to do so. Moreover, he isn’t about to let up so easily, as FOX Sports’s Mike Garafolo tweets that we should not hold our breaths waiting for Boone to report today. Garafolo then strongly adds that it’s “not gonna happen” and that the “interesting standoff continues”.
The most interesting camp standoff thus far involves superstar running back Jamaal Charles, but this one involving Boone and the 49ers has plenty of drama on its own. Because while it’s obvious that Charles deserves to get paid more as the clear focal point of the Kansas City Chiefs offense, Boone is a great player who is not a focal point of his offense. He’s one of the top guards in the league today, but he doesn’t carry the Niners offense either. Boone is set to make just $1.2 million and deserves a raise, but I’m sure the 49ers don’t want to be pressed into giving into his demands. I think we could have a very dramatic finish here, especially since Boone is a star guard in the prime of his career and has a lot to do with the success of the team. He’s also just as serious about Charles when it comes to holding out for more money, so this is something to keep a very close eye on and probably won’t go away with a mere whimper.
