Tennessee Titans backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst is one of the league’s most famed clipboard holders, as he’s warming the seat in between make-or-break starter Jake Locker and developing LSU Tigers rookie Zach Mettenberger, who has shown up well so far in the preseason. Whitehurst left last week’s preseason game against the New Orleans Saints with a right hand injury after being sacked by top-notch safety Kenny Vaccaro, and it looks like he’s dealing with a pinky injury.

According to 247Sports’s Terry McCormick, Whitehurst and head coach Ken Whisenhunt “all but said” that the backup QB will miss Saturday’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. That said, the 32-year-old Clemson product confirmed that nothing is broken, so he should be comfortably back by the time the regular season starts.
Whitehurst said of the injury, “It’s just sore right now. Hopefully, soon, I’ll be back out there practicing, but it’s pretty sore. It’s not broken. There’s some stuff going on. Hopefully, it’ll be quick.”
The “there’s some stuff going on” sounds like a sprain, but there isn’t anything to worry about here. In the third preseason game, it’s all about giving starters some more reps as a dress rehearsal, so expect Jake Locker and Mettenberger to see plenty of action out there against the Falcons.
