Ray Rice has unsurprisingly lost his previous locker room support
Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice is an embarrassment to the NFL, and there’s no justifiable reason for the Ravens to not release him or deactivate him for the full season, as Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman suggested. In the interesting column by Freeman (please follow the link, because it’s another amazing piece), Freeman texted with a Ravens player who stated that Rice once had the backing of the locker room. But now, that backing has dissipated, as the player told Freeman that he believes the support that was once there is now “gone”.

Good. I can’t contemplate why somebody would support Rice at this moment of time, and it seems like the only reason why some Ravens players supported him in the first place was because he mislead them into thinking that Janay Palmer somehow escalated the situation. What we know now is that Rice is a liar and an abusive person, which makes us question his previous image as a “clean” player. That reputation- along with Palmer defending him for some reason, which sounds like a testament to her high character- is what allowed him to escape with a two-game suspension, and that was obviously a travesty.
Rice’s days with the Ravens could come to a close, and it’s not like they need him anyway. He was horrible last season, and there’s a chance Justin Forsett and Bernard Pierce can form a more competent tag team this year. He was once one of the best and most respected RBs in the league, but that’s all gone now. Whether or not it was truly one isolated event of gross violence or a regular happenstance is irrelevant to most fans and players in the league; he needs to be punished in an incredibly severe way before he can work his way back. If the punishment is long enough, then he might end up being too old and out-of-shape at RB to get back to his old self. And at this point, he won’t be able to find anyone sympathetic to him, partially because he apparently lied to his teammates about what happened in that elevator.
