Houston Texans C.J. Fiedorowicz not practicing
The Houston Texans have one of the deepest tight end groups in the NFL, and that should be a real boon for head coach Bill O’Brien and veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (or a QB who takes over for Fitz-magic) going forward. Garrett Graham is the team’s No. 1 TE in name, but rookie C.J. Fiedorowicz and high-upside second-year “move” TE Ryan Griffin both have more upside, especially in the pass-catching department. Fiedorowicz was mostly deployed as a blocker at Iowa and spent most of his time blocking in Week 1 with Graham out, but he showed us in college and in the offseason that he has what it takes to develop into a quality pass-catcher in this league.

Right now his main focus might be getting healthy for the Texans next game, as Texans official site beat writer Deepi Sidhu reports that the rookie TE missed practice today with a foot injury. It’s unclear how serious his injury is, but I would expect it to be a minor issue. It’s a situation worth monitoring, but it isn’t a big injury given that Graham is back at practice today after missing the win over the Washington Redskins with a back injury.
Fiedorowicz failed to catch a pass last week, and I wonder if the Texans will use him as a pass-catcher with Griffin and Graham on the roster. While the rookie is a capable receiver at the position, he’s also a much better blocker than the other two TEs, with Griffin’s best asset clearly being his versatility as a receiver; this might end up dictating Fiedorwicz’s usage in his first year.
