Houston Texans News: Ryan Griffin, C.J. Fiedorowicz

The Houston Texans barely used their tight ends in Week 1, as they spend most of their time running the ball with unquestioned bellcow Arian Foster and sending targets to the star wide receiver duo of Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins. Starting TE Garrett Graham was out with a back injury, so youngsters C.J. Fiedorowicz and Ryan Griffin formed the team’s tight end duo. Both are talented players who have more raw ability than Graham, as he is the solid veteran of one of the league’s deepest TE groups.

  • Texans head coach Bill O’Brien is generally seen as a TE-friendly coach, but it didn’t seem that way in Week 1. Hopefully that changes, because it would be nice to see Griffin and Fiedorowicz receive some targets, as they have pass-catching ability and could be nice targets for Ryan Fitzpatrick over the middle. Unfortunately, while the steady Graham will be back in the lineup as the team’s starter this week against the Oakland Raiders, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that O’Brien stated Fiedorowicz is “day-to-day” with a foot injury. He’s a good two-way TE, but he mostly spent time as a blocker and received just one target with no catches, and he is the best blocking tight end on the team.

Even though Graham will get the start this week against a beatable Raiders secondary, it is the more athletic Griffin who could feature as the team’s main pass-catching threat (hopefully this ends up being the case). McClain tweets that Griffin “should play a lot” against the Raiders, and I hope that’s exactly what happens. He’s an athletic TE perfectly fit for the “flex” role and can be a big mis-match for defenses when utilized.
