Nick Foles on early Week 1 struggles: ‘it sort of excites me in the sense that it’s correctable’

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles was scintillating last season, as he took a chokehold on the Eagles starting quarterback gig and never gave it up in a nearly flawless season of supreme efficiency. That 27-TD, 2-INT season turned Foles into the team’s franchise quarterback, and everyone was anxious to see what he would do in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars as a follow-up performance.

  • He struggled early, fumbling the ball twice, throwing an interception, and uncharacteristically missing open receivers. A quick-fire decision-maker who thrived in the Eagles talent-filled offense last year, Foles looked indecisive and displayed erratic accuracy in a dreadful first half for the entire Eagles team. But he came alive in the second half and looked like the Foles we saw last year, and he ended up finishing with over 300 passing yards, more TDs than interceptions, and a respectable average of 7.2 yards per attempt.

So how does Foles feel about what was, in general, a disappointing outing thanks to his awful start? Well, he feels pretty good after looking at the tape, because he believes it was simply a lack of execution that will be easy for him to fix.

Foles said, via CSN Philly’s Reuben Frank, “I was definitely inaccurate on a few throws, and you just have to keep playing through them. But when you watch it on film, it sort of excites me in the sense that it’s correctable.”

There’s no doubt that those mistakes are easy to fix, and they were likely just do to a bad start. Foles quickly corrected them during the course of the game en route to a 322-yard performance, and he should surpass the 300-yard threshold this week on Monday night against the Indianapolis Colts secondary, which is one of the most porous in the league and lacks an adequate pass rush in front of them without Robert Mathis.
