Adrian Peterson agreed with team to not attend game

The Minnesota Vikings decision to deactivate Adrian Peterson for at least today’s game against the New England Patriots (prudent GM Rick Spielman has left “all options” on the table) was a pretty obvious one, but they also decided to keep Peterson away from the rest of the team by not allowing him to attend today’s game. Per a source close to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Peterson is totally cool with that, as he agreed with the Vikings decision. Although the source stated that it’s, of course, “very hard” for him not to be with this teammates, he also didn’t want to be a distraction.

  • Peterson is carrying himself the right way in the aftermath of the indictment, but he still deserves to be punished significantly for injuring his child and, more disconcertingly, not understanding that he went overboard. The league is obviously done with lenient punishments for domestic abuse, and they will most likely go hard at Peterson for two reasons. First of all, they want to make a statement after the Ray Rice backlash when they got the punishment wrong the first time, and they also reportedly have an even stricter policy regarding abuse against children. However, it’s important to always remember that this is a child injury- not abuse- case.

The Vikings will reportedly address Peterson’s status further tomorrow, as they are also in the process of gathering details. I think they will deactivate him for at least one more week, and they are handling things correctly by keeping him away from the team. It’s good to see that Peterson didn’t fight against this, because he is a determined person, and we saw this last season when he played through a few nagging injuries in some meaningless games.

At this point, we have no idea what the punishment will be for Peterson, as things are still very much in a state of flux.
