San Francisco 49ers star tight end Vernon Davis left Sunday night’s loss to the Chicago Bears with a left ankle injury in the fourth quarter, and he was having a decent game before that with three receptions on three targets for 39 yards after hauling in two TDs in a Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Davis was spotted on crutches after the game, making the immediate prognosis seem unkind.

It appears Davis suffered a sprained ankle, but the extend of his injury remains unclear. Although he had an MRI done on his ankle, CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco informs us that 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh stated on KNBR that he doesn’t have any updates on Davis’s status. Per Harbaugh, the Niners will take a closer look at him today and should have a better idea of where their star tight end is at.
In the meantime, the 49ers could faced to play UDFA Derek Carrier in their next game, as backup TE Vance McDonald is also nursing an injury. Carrier caught a few passes against the Bears, so it will be interesting to see if he can emerge as a better backup to Davis than McDonald. There are rumblings that Davis is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, which would be a nasty, four-week injury if true. But at this point, we don’t really have enough information to even speculate about the nature of his ailment.
