Vernon Davis ‘looked really good’, still game-time decision

San Francisco 49ers star tight end Vernon Davis caught four passes for 44 yards and two touchdowns in a solid Week 1 performance against the Dallas Cowboys, but he managed to haul in just three passes for 39 yards and no TDs last week against the Chicago Bears. Davis’s lack of production might have been frustrating for fantasy owners, but it was through no fault of his own. Not only was Colin Kaepernick completely awful in that game, but Davis also suffered an ankle injury.

  • Although the beastly TE didn’t suffer any structural damage on his ankle, he was seen hobbling on crutches and looked like a complete toss-up, with several people expecting him to sit out in this week’s big NFC West rivalry matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. Davis didn’t practice all week, but he’s still only listed as questionable after doing some jogging and working out today.

According to the Sacramento Bee’s Matt Barrows, Davis is indeed a game-time decision this week, so he’s still technically a toss-up. But it’s looking more and more like Davis will be able to play against a very favorable matchup, as the Cardinals struggle with covering athletic pass-catching TEs. Backup tight end Vance McDonald, who also left the Bears game with an injury, stated that Davis “looked really good” today when running and catching passes from the JUGGs machine. His status is definitely in question, but Davis has made quick progress and has a real shot at playing.
