Josh McCown expected to miss ‘several weeks’
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were obliterated by the rival Atlanta Falcons in front of a national audience, and almost all of us didn’t see that one coming, even with Buccaneers superstar DT Gerald McCoy out. Josh McCown continues to be a massive disappointing away from the friendly confines of Marc Trestman, Brandon Marshall, and Alshon Jeffery, and his horrendous night ended with an injury that, at first, didn’t seem severe.

However, FOX Sports’s Alex Marvez reported last night that McCown needed to undergo a second test on his injured thumb and is expected to miss “several weeks”. That gives plenty of time for second-year QB Mike Glennon to shine, and I expect him to take the starting job and make McCown an afterthought. While I still believe in McCown as a very good backup in this league, he’s played so poorly thus far that he isn’t much more than that. While he has been accurate, McCown has made some awful decisions and has shown no ability to stretch defenses, though that latter lacking quality is clearly not a surprise.
Vincent Jackson should break out of his shell with Glennon, who has better arm strength, and Mike Evans will become a big factor as he continues to adjust to the NFL game.
As for McCown, his thumb injury occurred when he hit his thumb on Falcons cornerback Robert McClain, and the injury to his throwing hand seemed like a sprained thumb that would bounce him out for just a couple of weeks. Lovie Smith reiterated that McCown is his starter, but I have a feeling he could change his mind now that Glennon has a nice string of games that will serve as something of a “tryout” to start permanently.
