Vernon Davis not expected to play, San Francisco 49ers ‘love’ Derek Carrier

San Francisco 49ers star tight end Vernon Davis is fully expected to miss today’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, and only his toughness has kept him in the discussion to play. Teams don’t rule star players out until they release their inactive list, but just about everyone is reporting that Davis is clearly expected to miss today’s contest.

  • FOX Sports’s Mike Garafolo is the latest to pass this kind of a report along, and he adds that it would be unwise to expect someone who was on crutches a few days ago to start playing. Davis is listed questionable for today’s game, but he clearly isn’t healthy and didn’t practice this week. While he did make some nice progress by catching passes from the JUGGs machine, it’s just not realistic to expect him to play.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the San Francisco 49ers “love” third-string TE Derek Carrier, who is an intriguing rookie with the opportunity to start today with Davis and TE2 Vance McDonald unlikely to play. The 49ers “love” for Carrier is worth noting, because he has a great chance to have a big day against a Cardinals defense that generally struggles with covering TEs.

Carrier caught three passes for 41 yards against the Chicago Bears last week. Rapoport reported earlier today that Davis should actually be considered “doubtful”- and not “questionable, like the injury report suggests- for today’s game.
