Green Bay Packers Clay Matthews thinks he can play through groin injury

Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews is arguably the most important player other than Aaron Rodgers on the team, though I would give that distinction to Jordy Nelson based on just how incredible he is (and how well he’s performed this season, especially in his monster game against the New York Jets in Week 2).

  • Matthews suffered a groin injury in the fourth quarter of the Packers loss on Sunday to the Detroit Lions, and he, as expected, did not return to the game. He recorded three tackles and a pass defended before exiting to put up his season stats to 12 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and two passes defended.

According to ESPN NFL Nation’s Rob Demovsky, Matthews isn’t sure when he’ll be able to return from the injury, but he did state that, at this point, he thinks he can play through the ailment.

“It’s hard to answer that right now. Obviously I think it’s something I can play with, but you’ve got to make sure you’re operating at a high level. That will be the biggest obstacle, not obstacle but thing to find out, and I think we’ll know more on Wednesday or Thursday.”

Neither Matthews nor, of course, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy have updates for us at this point in time, but we should know by Thursday whether or not Matthews plays. Since he’s one of the toughest payers in the game today, he should be expected to play as long as he practices at least one. While he is someone who can play without practicing, the Packers most likely won’t let that happen. The #PackIRs, despite their high volume of injuries, have an incredibly prudent medical staff, as evidenced by their handling of Aaron Rodgers last year.
