Marty Mornhinweg: I’m putting too much on Geno Smith
By Matt Reed
When New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was asked whether he would consider benching quarterback Geno Smith, he laughed at the idea. According the NYDailyNews.com, Mornhinweg claimed that he does believe that Geno Smith should be the team’s starting quarterback, but he needs to simplify plays in the red zone for the second year starter.
"“This is an issue now. There’s no question about that. Good quarterbacks take care of the ball,” Mornhinweg said. “He simply has been too loose there.”"
Statistically, Geno Smith had one of the best performances of his young career, throwing for over 300 yards, 316, and a touchdown pass. It was his two interceptions though that have critics calling for his job. On the Jets’ opening drive of Monday night’s game against the Chicago Bears, Smith threw his first interception, which cornerback Ryan Mundy ran back for a touchdown. Smith’s second interception came in the third quarter, with New York in Chicago’s red zone.
The Jets scored 1 touchdown out of their 6 trips in the red zone against the Bears. Mornhinweg commented on the team’s run game as well. “To be great in many cases you’ve got to go through some failures,” Mornhinweg said, “and sometimes it’s on Monday night.” Chris Ivory was the team’s leading rusher on Monday night, accounting for 44 of New York’s 114 total yards on the ground.
The New York Jets will host the Detroit Lions in Week 4.
