Kansas City Chiefs rule Eric Berry out

Kansas City Chiefs strong safety Eric Berry sprained his ankle in the team’s Week 2 loss to the Denver Broncos, and it was revealed after he missed the team’s Week 3 win over the Miami Dolphins that he suffered a high-ankle sprain. It’s a nasty injury that has already kept Berry out of one game, and he’ll miss a second straight week.

  • According to ESPN NFL Nation’s Adam Teicher, the Chiefs have officially ruled Berry out for the team’s big Monday Night Football clash with the New England Patriots, who feature star tight end Rob Gronkowski. Now that he’s settled in after rehabbing from an ACL tear and playing limited snaps (he still got plenty of targets, though), Gronk will be a huge factor in the Patriots offense again, and the Chiefs will be without one of the few players who are gifted enough to cover him.

There’s currently no timetable on Berry’s return, as his status for Week 5 against another tough opponent in Vernon Davis and the San Francisco 49ers is unknown. Berry wasn’t able to practice at all this week, so he was never in any sort of shape to play tomorrow night. Hopefully he can practice next week and play against the Niners, but it might be better to play it safe with a star player and allow him to rest against the 49ers. The Chiefs have a bye in Week 6, so they could give him extra time to rest until he’s fully healthy for the Week 7 tilt against the rival San Diego Chargers and their TE duo.
