San Diego Chargers pass rusher Dwight Freeney is still playing at a high level despite being 34, and not even a season-ending quad injury last year was able to wear him down. Freeney, however, was downgraded yesterday, as he did not practice due to a knee injury, and this came a day after he was limited at practice with the aforementioned ailment.

According to ESPN NFL Nation’s Eric Williams, Freeney has returned to practice today, and this is obviously terrific news for the Chargers. Aside from Brandon Flowers, Freeney is arguably the Chargers best player on defense, as he is an incredibly consistent source of pressure off of the edge and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. His sack totals aren’t high, but it’s clear that he is making a high impact on the Chargers defense each week.
The Chargers will face the New York Jets this week, and it will be interesting to see how often Freeney can put pressure on quarterback Geno Smith, who continues his spree of frustratingly inconsistent play. Star wideout Eric Decker is a game-time decision with a hamstring injury that he keeps pushing, and the fact that he isn’t 100% yet is huge for the Chargers defense.
