New York Jets David Nelson expects to play

New York Jets wide receiver David Nelson suffered an ankle injury in last week’s loss to the Detroit Lions, and the injury didn’t look good at all. The Jets signed Chris Owusu, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, out of fear that Nelson has sustained a major injury, and he was initially not expected to play in tomorrow’s game against the San Diego Chargers. However, Nelson has made solid progress since then, and he now has a legit shot at playing after being listed as questionable on the team’s injury report after practicing on Friday.

  • According to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, Nelson stated that he expects to play tomorrow against the Chargers, barring any setbacks of course. This statement caps an incredible one-week turn-around for Nelson on the health front, as he is now expected to play (though, the caveat is that he expects to play, and players are just about always more optimistic on injuries) after the injury appeared to be much more significant.

Nelson has just six receptions for 45 yards this season in four appearances, as he hasn’t been much of a factor in the offense. Hopefully Nelson can prove that he’s healthy on that ankle and can shake off what has been a disappointing start. Eric Decker has been pushing himself through a hamstring injury (he’s a game-time decision again this week), and he deserves all the help he can get. Jace Amaro and Jeremy Kerley have been playing well, but the Jets need Nelson to show off the consistency he displayed towards the end of the 2013 season.
