Detroit Lions working out Jay Feely

Anybody is an upgrade over Nate Freese, but the Detroit Lions effectively set themselves up for failure by anointing Alex Henery as their next kicker. His time with the Lions lasted just two games, as he was downright awful yesterday against the Buffalo Bills with three missed field goals. You could try to defend him by saying that they were all long field goals, but it’s a worthless defense. First of all, any NFL-caliber kicker should be able to do better, especially in such a close game. Secondly, Henery’s horrible leg strength is the reason why the Philadelphia Eagles cut ties with him; he is money from within 40 yards but clearly isn’t worthy of being a kicker in the NFL due to his woeful lack of range.

  • The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Lions will work out Jay Feely tomorrow, and bringing him on board would make an awful lot of sense. The Lions are desperate for a competent kicker, and Feely is a proven, veteran option who is still very accurate. Like Henery, he lacks leg strength, but he still has some range after nailing 11-12 attempts from 40-49 yards last year.

Rapoport notes that Sam Martin handles kick-off duties for the Lions, so Feely will only have to focus on field goals.
