Denver Broncos feature back Montee Ball went down in yesterday’s impressive win over the Arizona Cardinals with a groin injury, and it was pretty clear from the moment he suffered the injury that he would be out for an extended period of time. Ball was spotted on crutches following the game, and every post-game report we heard yesterday painted a grim picture of the injury. The Broncos will most likely go to a committee led by Ronnie Hillman, who has looked pretty nifty out there and brings a well-rounded game to the table, which is key for the Broncos (they want their backs to catch passes, which is why Ball worked hard on that part of his game in the offseason).

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported today that the Broncos are “bracing” for a major groin injury to their top back, and Rapoport’s report adds to the growing belief that Hillman will lead the way on the ground for the Broncos.
Ball has carried the rock 55 times for 172 yards with just nine receptions in what has been an inefficient season thus far for the Wisconsin product. I’m sure he’ll get better as his comfort level continues to grow, but his start to the season didn’t reflect the ability he showed off last year for the Broncos. Hillman, on the other hand, played well against the Arizona Cardinals after being used sparingly earlier this season. He’s been rising ever since he showed improvement during training camp, and he’s clearly worth a fantasy pick-up in Ball’s likely lengthy absence.
