Matthew Stafford doesn’t know if Calvin Johnson will play

Detroit Lions star wide receiver Calvin Johnson was able to play through an ankle injury in each of the past two weeks, and it seemed like he was getting healthier in the lead-up to the Week 5 battle against Jim Schwartz and the Buffalo Bills. Unfortunately, Johnson was knocked out of the game with an ankle injury, and his status for this week’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, who will be much better with Teddy Bridgewater back in the fold.

  • According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press’s Chris Tomasson, Lions star quarterback Matthew Stafford stated that he has “no idea” if Megatron will be able to suit up this week, though nobody should expect him to comment on an injury to the team’s star player. I think it would be most prudent for the Lions to keep Johnson’s long-term health in mind and hold him out. Johnson himself stated that while he will work to play this week, he needs to be “smart” about this latest aggravation.

I would tentatively expect the Lions to sit Johnson this week and to allow Golden Tate to go off against the Vikings, as Tate is more than capable of leading this passing attack. The biggest key could be the performance of rookie tight end Eric Ebron, though close eyes would also be peeled on Jeremy Ross if Johnson were to miss this week’s game.
