The Philadelphia Eagles star inside linebacker duo of DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks is uncertain for this week’s rivalry game against the New York Giants, as Ryans joined Kendricks on the injury report with a groin injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win over the St. Louis Rams. Both players are highly questionable for this week’s game, though it’s still a bit early to make any predictions. Kendricks has been out since Week 2 with a pulled calf muscle, and his return would be a massive boost for the Eagles defense.

According to Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer, neither Kendricks nor Ryans were able to practice today, so their statuses remain in flux. It looked like Kendricks actually returned to the practice field yesterday, but he was merely observing the session. The Eagles would be in big trouble at inside linebacker if both players are now out, because they simply don’t have sufficient depth behind those two standouts.
Kendricks is especially important to the Eagles defense, as his coverage skills and athleticism are top-notch. Without him, Eli Manning could have even more fun that usual when throwing it to rising TE Larry Donnell.
So far this season, DeMeco Ryans has 33 tackles and two passes defended, and it sounds like he has a better chance of playing this week. I expect at least one of the two ILBs to be out there against the Giants.
